I’ve always been intrigued by second-person narratives. They’re pretty rare, and often pretty hard to read. They’re also quite hard to write successfully, I think.
Faced with those challenges, I was foolhardy enough to give it a crack with this speculative fiction short story. It seemed to suit the story, which is concerned with the complex intertwining of memory, identity and self-reflection. I felt those themes lent themselves to the second-person point of view and, having written it like this, I can’t imagine it done any other way.
